Medellín is again nominated in version 27 of the World Travel Awards, considered the «Oscars» of the tourism industry, which seeks to recognize, reward, and exalt the best destinations, hotels, tourist attractions, airlines, and institutions of the travel industry and tourism worldwide.
This year, Medellín is nominated in six categories for the South American chapter, highlighting the city as the best destination: cultural, meetings and conferences, getaway destinations, businesses, festivals, and events. In addition, The Bureau, as the city’s tourism promotion entity, is nominated as the best on the South American continent.
«We extend the invitation to vote for our city because, in case of winning any of the awards, we would enter to compete with the other continents in a final round of voting. In this way, the name of Medellín would once again be in the eyes of the world tourism industry due to positive references, an aspect that will definitely add to our work to recover tourism once this situation passes,» explained the undersecretary of Tourism, Ledys López.
For the director of the Greater Medellin Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sandra Howard Taylor, it is an honor that the entity is nominated as one of the best in South America.
«This means that the promotion work is recognized by international allies and this positive international visibility is key to continue opening doors for our city and the department, in the world,» said the director.
In addition to Medellín, Cali and Cartagena de Indias were also nominated for the awards. The selection includes Procolombia and several hotels in the city.

In recent years, the Antioquia capital has been awarded as:
«South America’s leading getaway city destination» (2016).
«South America’s top meeting destination and conference destination» (2015).
«South America’s top meeting destination and destination of conferences» (2014).
The hotels in Medellín San Fernando Plaza and the InterContinental have also been winners of the World Travel Awards.
Voting
All people can participate in the voting to choose the prize winners. The vote of those who belong to the tourism and travel industry counts double.
The deadline to vote is September 1.
The awards gala for South America will be held on October 10, 2020, in Santiago (Chile).In case of receiving any of the awards, the city will compete with the winners of the Middle East, Africa, Indian Ocean, Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Australia, in a final round of voting to choose the world winners, which will be met next November 27 in Moscow (Russia).
